Police: Burglar beaten with his own bat

NORTH PORT, Fla. — A would-be burglar picked the wrong house to rob Thursday.

Noah Dassat, 33, broke into a North Port home armed with a baseball bat and attacked the occupants, according to North Port police. The home was occupied by a man and his wife as well as their three children and their grandmother, police said.

According to police, the husband wrestled Dassat down and put him in a bear hug while his wife took Dassat’s bat and beat him. The suspect got away and ran from the house.

Police said they were contacted about a man matching the description of the robber visiting a nearby hospital with head injuries.  He was brought into custody.

"There was police everywhere looking for him and it went on for hours," a neighbor told WFLA. "The guy's got him held down, yup. That's how we roll around here."

Josh Taylor, a police spokesman, told WWSB that North Port police don't condone violence, and that the couple was simply protecting their family.

“You have the right to protect your home and yourself so do what you've got to do, I guess,” he said. "This is a home that had a mom, a dad, a grandmother and three small children, I can tell you what I'd do if somebody broke into my house."

Dassat was arrested and charged with armed robbery, battery and criminal mischief.
