Gaza rocket attack on central Israel town injures 7

MISHMERET, Israel — A long-range rocket launched from the Gaza Strip hit a residential building in central Israel on Monday, injuring at least seven people -- including two infants -- The Times of Israel reported.

It was the farthest rocket attack since the 2014 Gaza war, Reuters reported.

The rocket landed in the town of Mishmeret, located 50 miles from the Gaza Strip, The Times of Israel reported.

Emmanuel Nahshon, the spokesman for Israel's Foreign Ministry, said the home in Mishmeret was hit by a rocket from Gaza. There was no confirmation from Palestinian spokesmen, Reuters reported.

The attack comes 10 days after rockets were fired toward Tel Aviv, according to The Associated Press.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who is cutting short a trip to the United States because of the incident, vowed to respond with force, the BBC reported.

Hamas told Egyptian security officials that the attack was an "accident," The Times of Israel reported.
