Giant sinkhole opens at Japanese intersection

FUKUOKA, Japan — Work on a nearby subway station might have played a role in the sudden appearance of a large sinkhole that closed five major roads, city officials said.

Two small holes steadily enlarged until they grew to one nearly 100 feet wide and nearly 50 feet deep early Tuesday near Hakata Station, the busiest in the city, according to the BBC.

The opening caused power, water and gas line outages, according to the BBC. The hole is filling with wastewater from broken sewer pipes, according to CNN. Transportation lines were also interrupted.

There were no serious injuries.

Officials believe that work to extend the subway from the Hakata Station to the city center played a role in the collapse, according to CNN.
