‘Headless chicken monster' found floating in deep ocean is really sea cucumber

It looks like how everyone is describing it, a “headless chicken monster,” and when you see a photo of it, it may make you ask, “What is it?”

It's actually a sea cucumber that lives in the depths of the Antarctic Ocean that has a transparent body and a webbed veil, USA Today reported.

The official name, despite the descriptive “headless chicken monster” moniker, is Enypniastes eximia.

Even scientists who study the creatures of the deep admit to its similarity to tonight’s possible dinner entree.

“It looks a bit like a chicken just before you put it in the oven,” said Dirk Welsford, program leader for the Australian Antarctic Division. He was one of the researchers who found the odd animal.

It was originally only photographed one time in the Gulf of Mexico last year, the New York Times reported.

But now it has been found swimming, or floating, in the waters of the Southern Ocean, 2,500 miles from Australia, the Times reported.

So how did the researchers get the rare images of the creature?

The camera attaches to toothfish longlines in the Southern Ocean, CNN reported. A toothfish longline is used to catch the fish using weighted lines that sink in the deep water, according to the Australian Fisheries Management Authority.

The camera attached to the line operates for a long time, under the pressure of the water depths, and is in pitch black surroundings, CNN reported.
