#LogOutFacebook: NAACP begins boycott in response to Russian hackers targeting African-Americans

The NAACP is boycotting Facebook for a week in response to a report inidcating Russian hackers target users of color.

BALTIMORE — The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People is calling for a week-long boycott of Facebook Tuesday in response to data breaches and privacy concerns with the social media network.

The protest comes a day after the release of a report in which the Senate Intelligence Committee that found Russian hackers influenced the 2016 election and targeted African-Americans.

"Facebook's engagement with partisan firms, its targeting of political opponents, the spread of misinformation and the utilization of Facebook for propaganda promoting disingenuous portrayals of the African American community is reprehensible," Derrick Johnson, NAACP president and CEO, said in a statement Tuesday.

"We are calling on Congress to conduct further investigations, and calling on users to log out of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp on Tuesday, December 18," the organization said on its website.

The NAACP also said it returned a donation it recently received from Facebook. The amount of the donation and when it was received was not made clear.
