HILTON HEAD, S.C. — A 1,400-pound tiger shark named Chessie was caught this week off the coast of Hilton Head Island, but not for the first time.

This was the second time the shark has been caught, and both times it was by the same fisherman.

Chip Michalove, owner of Outcast Sport Fishing, told WSOC-TV that he caught Chessie Wednesday about a half-mile off the beach on the island.

Michalove said he caught Chessie last May and put a satellite tag on her.

He was fishing Wednesday with a group from Oklahoma when they caught the massive shark and he realized from the tag that it was the same fish.

He said it’s the largest tiger shark satellite ever tagged on the East Coast, and the first one he’s ever recaptured.

Michalove said he thinks the shark is pregnant because she is much wider than last year. The shark weighed 1,200 pounds last year.

Chessie has traveled 2,000 miles in the past year, according to The Associated Press.

The tracking is a project of the nonprofit OCEARCH, which works to learn about the movement of sharks.
