Meek Mill becomes co-owner of hat brand Lids

Meek Mill has announced he will be co-owner of hats and sports products retailer Lids.

There appears to be no cap on what Meek Mill is accomplishing after his return to entertainment since his release from prison. In addition to announcing his upcoming "Free Meek" docuseries, the Philadelphia lyricist announced Wednesday that he is now co-owner of Lids.

Mill revealed in an interview with Business Insider published Wednesday that he will join the team that's headed by his good friend and business associate Michael Rubin as co-owners of the hat brand, which is North America's largest hats retailer. Rubin is the CEO of Kynetic, the holding company for retailers like Rue La La and Fanatics, the latter of which is a part-owner of Lids. Rubin, co-owner of the Philadelphia 76ers, was among Mill's famous friends who visited him while he was in prison. Upon his release, Rubin sent a helicopter to take Mill from prison to a Sixer's playoff game.

"I've been shopping at Lids my whole life, wearing hats, fitted, of course, fitted hats and caps, all types of hats," Mill, 32, told Business Insider. "In our culture, it's been a big thing. So, it was something I ain't have to think twice about and always believed in, that it'll work."

He will also give input on the creative side, offering his own limited-edition line of hats in August.

"I have a lot of influence, and I can see things kind of clearer. I would definitely love to involve our whole culture in Lids more," he told BI.

The rapper and philanthropist has been busy with music and advocacy since he was released from prison in April 2018. He served five months for violating a charge he received at the age of 21. He has made it his mission to combat against what he and critics of the U.S. criminal justice system consider unjust sentencing.

Mill's Amazon docuseries “Free Meek,” which will be presented in five parts, will delve into his experiences with the criminal justice system. The program, executive produced by Jay-Z, will be released on Aug. 9.
