Right around midnight Friday, Simpson announced via a video on the Twitter account @TherealOJ32 that he would soon share tweets and perspectives from the account. The page in just about 12 hours snagged nearly 150,000 followers.

"It should be a lot of fun," Simpson, 71, said in the video. "I've got a little getting even to do, so God bless. Take care."

Simpson said the account was the only “official” account, since there had been other impostor accounts circulating.

Shortly after the video posted, it appeared that a duplicate account was created that shared several derogatory tweets, including one that simply read, "I killed her." That account had about 12,000 followers as of Saturday afternoon.

The football legend has become more known for his alleged ties to his ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson’s death than his remarkable college and NFL career. On Oct. 3, 1995, he was infamously acquitted of the killings of Brown Simpson and her companion Ron Goldman.

In 2008, Simpson, was  convicted of armed robbery and served nine years in a Nevada prison. He was released on parole in October 2017.

In the hours since his Twitter account debuted, many have posted jokes and memes about Simpson, especially his comments about getting even.

Many commented that his arrival to Twitter was particularly strange, since it falls just a few days after the anniversary of the murders of Brown Simpson and Goldman. (Their bodies were found on June 13, 1994.)
