SANFORD, Fla. — An Indiana University police officer is getting a lot of praise today for saving a 3-year-old girl’s life on his wedding day.
Officer John O'Rourke was in Sanford, Florida, for his March 28 wedding. On the morning of his wedding, he stopped by a doughnut shop to pick up some breakfast when a commotion broke out in the middle of the dining area, according to a Facebook post by the Indiana University Police Department.
He realized that a girl had suffered a seizure, and restaurant patrons were gathering around her. O’Rourke immediately sprang into action, ordering someone to call 911 as he performed chest compressions and rescue breathing which brought the little girl back to consciousness.
Paramedics arrived shortly afterwards.
“I just sat in my car for about 20 minutes processing everything,” O’Rourke recalled.
Later that day, O’Rourke married his bride, Virginia and had a good story to tell at the reception.
Some attendees at the wedding included Florida Highway Patrol troopers he had worked with in the past.
O’Rourke said he remembered one of them saying, “You know John. He's always at the right place at the right -- or wrong -- time.”
“It had to be a doughnut shop,” O’Rourke said. “You can’t make this up.”
