Report: Twitter may revamp timeline, users react to news

Twitter users responded with criticism following a report from BuzzFeed News that suggested Twitter is planning to launch a new feature that may affect users' timelines as early as next week.

What is being described as an algorithmic timeline is speculated to reorder tweets using an algorithm to determine which tweets people want to see. Currently, Twitter's timeline is in reverse chronological order.

Mashable reported in early December that Twitter had been experimenting with out-of-chronological-order timelines. The algorithm is believed to sort based on the quality of the tweet instead of by time, similar to Facebook.

Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey mentioned in 2015 that the company was questioning the current reverse chronological timeline in an effort to bolster its platform.

"We continue to show a questioning of our fundamentals in order to make the product easier and more accessible to more people," Dorsey told Buzzfeed.

Currently a Twitter feed is in reverse chronological order, which some argue confuses Twitter newcomers. The feature is rumored to be ready to roll out next week and, according to Endgadget, will allow users to opt-in for the new timeline.
