School district in Massachusetts trying out year of no homework

HOLYOKE, Mass. — Several elementary schools in Holyoke are trying out a new way to get students to do more work: eliminating homework.

The plan comes as school days are being extended by two hours as part of the state receivership program to help transform the "chronically under-performing" district.

The idea was proposed by Principal Jackie Glasheen, according to Western Mass. News.

"Some people think it's a crazy idea,” Kelly said. "We really want our kids to go home at 4:00 tired.  We want their brain to be tired. We want them to enjoy their families, to go to soccer and football practice.”

Western Mass. News says this is a one-year pilot program at several schools and will be evaluated next summer.
