Texas man accused of fatally shooting wife dies after standoff with police

CYPRESS, Texas — A Texas man who is suspected of killing his estranged wife and critically injuring her daughter died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound after a standoff with Houston police, KHOU reported.

According to the Harris County Sheriff's Office, Arthur Edigin, 62, opened fire on a car with the 66-year-old woman and her 32-year-old daughter in a parking lot in front of Christ the Redeemer Catholic Church in Cypress, the Houston Chronicle reported.

The Harris County Sheriff's Office said Edigin was found dead in the bathroom of his hotel room,at an Extended Stay America hotel in west Houston, the newspaper reported.

Authorities had contacted Edigin after he had barricaded himself in a room on the top floor of the hotel. A SWAT team broke out a window, the Chronicle reported.

The church was hosting a choir rehearsal, bible study and another group meeting at the time of the shooting, the Chronicle reported.

"Our prayers are with the victims and families affected by the tragic shooting this evening at Christ the Redeemer Catholic Church," the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston said in a statement. "Officials with the Archdiocese and the parish community are cooperating with local authorities in their investigation."
