Texas woman extends help to homeless man, changes his life

CLEAR LAKE, Texas — A simple conversation between two strangers who crossed paths four times a day changed a homeless man’s life.

Ginger Sprouse is a chef and small business owner in Clear Lake, Texas. She told KHOU that she was wondered why she always saw the same man sitting on the same street corner, rain or shine.

“It really began to concern me, and then I talked to a lot of people in the community and a lot of people wondered what was the deal,” said Sprouse.

After starting a conversation with the man, Victor Hubbard, a friendship began to blossom. She learned about his mental illness and he told her that he was stationed on the corner while he waited for his mother to return to him.

Sprouse started to share Victor's story on a Facebook page titled "This is Victor." Thousands of people started following Victor's story, and soon his community pulled together to help him.

People reached out to give him a free eye exam, food, clothes and even organized a fundraiser for him.

Thanks to Sprouse, he is now also getting the medical attention he needs for his mental illness.

“She came around and she kind of saved me,” Victor said. “She helped me. It’s like grace.”

Sprouse hired him to work at her business, Art of the Meal, to keep him off the street. He is also living with Sprouse's family.

The Facebook page even reunited Victor with his family. A few days ago, he was finally reunited with his mother.

“I got to talk to her and I really feel like I accomplished something,” he said.
