Trader Joe's hummus recalled in 30 states

Possible listeria contamination has prompted one of the companies that makes Trader Joe's brand hummus to recall two versions of the dip in 30 states.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced the recall, from Bakkavor Foods USA, Inc., in a notice Thursday. No illnesses have been reported.

The affected products come in 16-ounce tubs, and are marked underneath with "use by" dates through Dec. 15 and plant identification code "C." Trader Joe's noted that tubs with a plant identification code of "J" were made at a different facility and not affected.

Officials released the following list of affected products:

  • In Iowa, Illinois, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, Ohio and Wisconsin: Trader Joe's White Bean & Basil Hummus (SKU 91107)
  • In Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Louisiana, North Carolina, New Mexico, Nevada, Oklahoma, Oregon, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia and Washington: Trader Joe's White Bean & Basil Hummus (SKU 91107) and Trader Joe's Mediterranean Hummus (SKU 90642)

Trader Joe's has removed all the recalled products from store shelves and destroyed them.

"If you purchased any of the Mediterranean Hummus or White Bean & Basil Hummus with the specified plant identification and date codes, please do not eat it," the company said in a recall notice. "We urge you to discard the product or return it to any Trader Joe's for a full refund. … We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience."
