Woman warns others after granddaughter burned on playground slide

AZTEC, N.M. — While parents are wise to limit their children's outdoor playtime during extreme, triple-digit temperatures, a grandmother in New Mexico wants to warn others that even normal summer temperatures can cause playground equipment to become dangerously hot.

Mitzi Thompson told KOB that her 8-year-old granddaughter received a painful burn a few weeks ago after riding a playground slide when the temperature was in the mid to high 80s.

Thompson said her granddaughter was crying and in a great deal of pain from the burn she received.

KOB tested the playground slide equipment this week with an infrared thermometer and found the slide to be 50 degrees hotter than the air temperature.

Park officials said there are signs posted warning parents and children about how playground equipment can become hot and cause burns, but Thompson said the signs are too small and that she would like to see the playground covered.

Officials recommended wearing proper clothing to reduce the risk of injury on hot playground equipment.
