According to the South Florida Sun Sentinel and WPLG, Fort Lauderdale police said the teen, who attended Cross Creek School in Pompano Beach, was holding a gun Feb. 1 when he approached real estate agent Stefano Barbosa, 37, outside a Northwest 15th Terrace home. The boy then demanded that Barbosa drive him to a nearby ATM and make two $500 withdrawals, investigators said. The teen later fired at Barbosa, striking him in the chest and causing him to crash into a tree, authorities said.

The boy fled as Barbosa died from his injuries, police said.

On Feb. 4, police apprehended the teen on unrelated charges before confirming via cellphone records that he was at the scene of the killing, the news outlets reported.

Broward State Attorney Harold F. Pryor announced Tuesday that the child, who has been arrested on multiple occasions and was charged with armed robbery at the age of 12, will be charged as an adult in Barbosa’s death.

“This young person’s issues are so significant that they require treatment, help and services beyond what the juvenile justice system can provide at this time,” Pryor said in a statement, according to WPLG.

The teen is being held without bond, the Sun Sentinel reported.
