Video shows police rescue woman, dog who fell through icy water

PRAIRIE DU CHIEN, Wis. — A woman and her dog were rescued after falling through icy water.

Police bodycamera video shows officers, firefighters and sheriff’s deputies help the woman from the frigid water around 1:30 p.m. Jan. 15 at St. Feriole Island slough, the Telegraph Herald reported.

In the video, police Lt. Casey Cox and sheriff’s Lt. Ryan Fradette walk onto the ice toward the woman but fall in themselves. Another sheriff’s deputy, Lt. Wade Hutchison, helps them pull the dog from the water. Then they help get the woman out. Cox and Fradette were then able to get out on their own.

“Just a couple minutes can change your life or somebody else’s life,” Police Chief Kyle Teynor told the Telegraph Herald.

The woman, who has not been identified, was taken to a hospital where she was treated and released.

Teynor said it’s the third animal rescue in the 17 years he has been with the department.

“We have a leash ordinance, and oftentimes it upsets people when we enforce that, but there’s a larger picture,” Teynor said. “People don’t really see that in the time that we’re writing them their citations for having their dog off the leash.”

Teynor praised rescuers.

“Their actions that day reminded us of the great things that law enforcement does for our community every day with very little recognition,” he said.
