Boil water alert issued for Umatilla after water main break

UMATILLA — The city of Umatilla has issued a boil-water notice for residents using city water.

The boil-water alert comes after a water main break in the city Wednesday and is expected to last thre days.

The city was forced to shut down the local water plant. Students went home from school early after the restrooms stopped functioning properly.

"This is a major vein to the system, and when it went out, we had to turn the plant off," said Umatilla City Manager Glenn Irby. "The entire city is out."

The break happened along Kentucky Avenue. When the old pipe broke, the water pressure dropped and more than 100 homes, businesses and schools were left without water, officials said.

Crews cut into the pipe to replace a 10 foot section.
