NFL Game Summary - Carolina At Tampa Bay

Sunday, December 30, 2007

(Sports Network) - Matt Moore threw a pair of touchdown passes and DeAngelo Williams rushed for 121 yards with a pair of scores, as the Carolina Panthers ended the season with a 31-23 victory over the playoff-bound Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Raymond James Stadium.

Moore connected on 15-of-24 passes for 174 yards with an interception for the Panthers (7-9), who won three of their last five games after a five-game losing streak derailed a promising 4-2 start.

After the Panthers ended Tampa Bay's last drive, Vinny Testaverde took the final snap of the contest and of his NFL career.

Testaverde, who was called out of retirement in October after injuries to Carolina quarterbacks Jake Delhomme and David Carr, announced Saturday that his 21-year career would come to an end following Sunday's season-finale.

"Vinny and I have become real good friends," said Moore. "He is just a real great guy, a great player and an even better person. He'll definitely be missed by a lot of guys."

The 44-year-old veteran played with Tampa Bay, Cleveland, Baltimore, the New York Jets, Dallas, New England and the Panthers. He threw for 46,233 yards and 275 touchdowns with 267 interceptions.

It was a fitting end for Testaverde, who was originally selected with the first overall pick by the Buccaneers in the 1987 NFL Draft after a standout career at the University of Miami-Florida.

Luke McCown completed 21-of-28 passes for 236 yards with two touchdowns and an interception for Tampa Bay (9-7), which lost its last two games after wrapping up the NFC South. McCown was also Tampa's leading rusher, gaining 47 yards on five attempts.

The Buccaneers took the field without many of their starters in anticipation of next Sunday's 1 p.m. (et) playoff game against the New York Giants . Among those on the Bucs' inactive list were running back Earnest Graham, quarterback Jeff Garcia, wide receivers Joey Galloway and Ike Hilliard, strong safety Jermaine Phillips, fullback B.J. Askew and middle linebacker Barrett Ruud.

"I'm very eager to get going in the playoffs," said Bucs head coach Jon Gruden. "I thought our coaches and players did a great job in preparing for today's game. This was a big game for a lot of guys who got a chance to really get their first time on the field as Buccaneers."

Williams' second touchdown of the game -- a 32-yard run with 6:24 left in the game -- gave the Panthers a 31-23 lead. On the Bucs' next possession, Richard Marshall intercepted McCown with 4:48 remaining.

After a Panthers punt gave Tampa Bay the ball back, Ken Lucas broke up a 4th- and-7 pass to Brian Clark to give Carolina possession with 41 seconds to play.

Jerramy Stevens caught a three-yard TD pass with 11:04 left in the first quarter to put the Bucs up early. The score was set up by a 52-yard pass to Chad Lucas that left Tampa with 1st-and-goal at Carolina's five-yard line.

The Panthers answered with a 14-play, 72-yard scoring drive that was capped by a two-yard touchdown pass to Christian Fauria with 3:55 left in the opening frame. Steve Smith had two catches for 31 yards on the drive.

Tampa Bay then pulled ahead on a 31-yard Matt Bryant field goal with 12:32 remaining in the half. The score was set up by a Phillip Buchanon interception that left Tampa on Carolina's 18-yard line.

Carolina followed by pulling ahead 14-10 after Dante Rosario hauled in a 20- yard touchdown pass with 6:40 remaining in the second quarter. The Panthers looked sharp on the 68-yard, 11-play drive that took nearly six minutes to complete.

The Bucs cut their deficit to 14-13 after a 23-yard Bryant field goal with 2:34 left in the half. The score was set up by Will Allen, who recovered a fumble on the Panthers' 17-yard line after a botched Carolina punt return by Ryne Robinson.

Carolina went into the half up 17-13 after a 19-yard John Kasay field goal. The score was set up by a 60-yard kickoff return by Robinson.

The Bucs made the most of their opening second-half possession as they took a 20-17 lead after a Michael Bennett 23-yard touchdown reception with 6:57 left in the third stanza. The scoring opportunity was set up by a 31-yard scramble from McCown, which put Tampa at Carolina's 25-yard line.

A 46-yard pass to Drew Carter set up a one-yard touchdown run by Williams with 4:03 remaining in the third quarter to put the Panthers back on top.

Bryant moved the Bucs to within a point on a 49-yard field goal in the first minute of the fourth quarter.

Game Notes:

Bennett's touchdown capped a 98-yard touchdown drive, the longest in Tampa Bay history...Stevens' score was his third touchdown in the last two weeks...The Bucs have scored 111 points off turnovers this season.
