Line Of Scrimmage: Week 11 - Big Bill's Bad Gamble
Posted: 1:22 pm EST November 18, 2009
Philadelphia, PA -- (Sports Network) - There may not be a coach in the National Football League more respected than Bill Belichick, who through three Super Bowl titles, four Super Bowl appearances, a slew of brilliant gameday decisions and a number of prudent personnel decisions, is undoubtedly one of the best the league has ever seen. And for one week - though Eric Mangini will always give him a run for his money - there won't be a coach in the National Football League more disrespected than Belichick. By now, you know about the decision. On a 4th-and-2 play from the 28-yard line with just over two minutes to play and his team nursing a 34-28 lead over the Indianapolis Colts, Belichick sent Tom Brady and the offense back out onto the field to attempt a highly risky pass play. Reach the line to gain, and New England wins the game. Instead, Indianapolis tackled running back-turned-receiver Kevin Faulk just short of the line, handing the ball back to Peyton Manning with two minutes to play. Four plays later, with just 13 ticks left, Manning hit Reggie Wayne on a 1- yard slant to give the Colts a 35-34 win, close out an instant classic, and open the floodgates of criticism for Belichick. Why, oh why, did Belichick choose not to go by the book, punt the ball, and force Manning to drive 70-or-so-yards instead of 29? Sure, Manning was having an unbelievable night and had already led a couple of quick touchdown drives in the fourth quarter, but the Patriots had also intercepted Manning twice and forced seven punts in the game, including five in the second half. Given that recent history, why the lack of confidence in the "D"? Belichick wasn't really saying, just speaking in the normal vague platitudes that have become his trademark. "I tell the team - and I think they believe that I do what I feel like is best for our football team to win every game," said Belichick on Monday. "I put the team first and I put those decisions first. I would hope everybody understands that." Maybe, but didn't the call itself smack of hubris? Does a 4th-and-2 dart to a running back, thrown right at the sticks, really constitute a higher- percentage opportunity than punting the football in that situation? "I thought it was our best chance to win," Belichick reiterated. "I thought we needed to make that one play and then we could basically run out the clock. We weren't able to make it." In the end, the call wasted a brilliant effort from Brady, who was 29-of-42 for 375 yards, three touchdowns and one pick, and Randy Moss, who had his best game of the year with nine catches for 179 yards and two touchdowns in the loss. Moreover, it changed the game for the Patriots (6-3), who are now unlikely to challenge the Colts for the top playoff seed in the AFC, and in fact must continue to ward off the likes of the Dolphins (4-5) and Jets (4-5) in the AFC East. Though certainly New England can rebound from a Sunday night that will live in infamy, if the Patriots' 2009 season ends on the road at some postseason stage other than the Super Bowl, you can bet an ill-fated decision made in mid- November is going to be trotted out as one of the culprits in the club's demise. Not that Belichick is likely to be fazed. "Everybody's entitled to their opinion out there," said Belichick. "I respect that." Let's take a look at the week that will be in the National Football League: NFL POWER POLL The Sports Network's updated NFL Power Poll, which ranks all 32 league teams, can be found at: http://www.sportsnetwork.com/merge/tsnform.aspx?c=sportsnetwork&page= nfl/misc/nfl-poll.htm FANTASY FOCUS Find Fantasy Editor Steve Schwarz's latest analysis at: http://www.sportsnetwork.com/merge/tsnform.aspx?c=sportsnetwork&page= fantasy/index.aspx SUICIDE POOL PIX 1. Pittsburgh (at Kansas City) - Not a good week for the Chiefs to lose a playmaker like Dwayne Bowe, and Kansas City figures to get little going offensively. 2. Dallas (vs. Washington) - Trap game jumped up and bit the Cowboys in Green Bay, but the Redskins won't have the luxury of facing Chris Simms this week. 3. New Orleans (at Tampa Bay) - After a scare in St. Louis, the Saints will answer the bell a bit earlier against the overmatched Bucs. THE GAMES I again lowered the ol' win percentage last week by going 9-6, though my similarly 9-6 mark against the spread was an improvement over a tough Week 9. I thought a little too much of the double-digit favorite Dolphins and Saints (or perhaps I didn't think enough of the Bucs and Rams), and the Cardinals covering the eight-and-a-half against a Seahawks team that was in the game until the end had me frustrated. My record for the year is now 94-50 (.653), and 79-64-1 (.552) at the window. Fast Fact: The Dolphins (3-0 against Carolina) and Houston Texans (2-0) are the only two NFL teams that the Panthers have not defeated in their history. Prediction: Absence of Brown will have a noticeable effect on the Dolphins, who will have to lean too much on Chad Henne in a key game for both teams. Panthers 21, Dolphins 17. --- Indianapolis (9-0) at Baltimore (5-4), Sunday, 1:00 (Baltimore -1) Storylines: Colts, who have won 18 straight regular season games, look to move to 10-0 for the first time since 2005, when they won their first 13 en route to a 14-2 finish...Colts kicker Matt Stover, the Ravens' all-time leading scorer and a member of the team for 13 seasons (1996-2008), will face his former team...Ravens defensive tackle Haloti Ngata (ankle) considered questionable after missing the team's last two games, and pass rusher Terrell Suggs (knee) expected to be absent after being injured in Monday night's win over the Browns...Ravens released kicker Steve Hauschka earlier this week and signed ex- Browns kicker Billy Cundiff to replace him...Colts quarterback Peyton Manning leads the NFL in passing yards (2872) and touchdown passes (20), and Indianapolis is first in the league in passing offense (315.1 yards per game), completion percentage (69.6), third-down percentage (50.0) and total touchdown passes (21)...Indianapolis wide receiver Reggie Wayne leads the league in receptions (69) and is tied for the NFL lead in touchdown catches (8) along with the Cardinals' Larry Fitzgerald...Colts are No. 1 in NFL scoring defense (15.8 points per game) and touchdowns allowed (14)...Colts and Ravens are tied for the NFL lead in fewest fumbles lost (2).
