Brett Favre Highlights NFC Players Of The Week

Posted: 3:44 pm EST December 24, 2003

Green Bay Packers quarterback Brett Favre, San Francisco 49ers safety Tony Parrish and Dallas Cowboys kicker Billy Cundiff were named NFC Offensive, Defensive and Special Teams Players of the Week, respectively, for games played the 16th week of the 2003 season.

Favre played despite the death of his father Irvin, who died Sunday of a heart attack or stroke while driving near his home in Kiln, Mississippi. His car ran into a ditch, but authorities have said the crash did not kill him. He was 58 years old.

Brett Favre made his 205th consecutive start Monday night in Oakland, the day after his father's death. The three-time MVP finished the contest 22-of-30 passing, hitting 12 different receivers, and put on quite a performance in the opening half. He connected on his first nine passes and threw for 311 yards with four scores as Green Bay opened a comfortable 31-7 cushion.

Favre ended the contest with 399 yards passing and four touchdowns, leading the Packers to a crucial 41-7 win over the Raiders. Favre and his wife, Deanna, flew to Mississippi after the game.

The Packers still have a shot to make the playoffs and win the NFC North championship. They play Denver at home on Sunday.

Parrish earned defensive honors for his play in helping the 49ers beat Philadelphia, 31-28, in overtime at Lincoln Financial Field. The victory improved San Francisco's record to 7-8 and was the team's first triumph on the road this season.

Tied for the NFL lead with nine interceptions, Parrish finished the game with five tackles, two interceptions, three passes defensed and a forced fumble.

Cundiff helped the Cowboys clinch their first playoff berth since 1999, connecting on four-of-four field goals (24, 42, 21, 49) in the club's 19-3 win over the NFC East-rival New York Giants.

Dallas improved to 10-5 with the win and can clinch the division championship and earn a first-round bye with a victory against the New Orleans Saints and a Philadelphia loss to the Washington Redskins.

Other nominees for NFC Offensive Player of Week 16 were Atlanta's offensive line, San Francisco running back Kevan Barlow, Minnesota quarterback Daunte Culpepper, St. Louis running back Marshall Faulk, St. Louis wide receiver Torry Holt, Tampa Bay wide receiver Keenan McCardell and Minnesota rookie running back Onterrio Smith

Other nominees for NFC Defensive Player of Week 16 were Detroit rookie linebacker Boss Bailey, Atlanta cornerback Juran Bolden, Atlanta linebacker Keith Brooking, Green Bay defensive end Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila, Minnesota safety Brian Russell and St. Louis defensive end Grant Wistrom.

Other nominees for NFC Special Teams Player of Week 16 were Philadelphia punt returner Brian Westbrook and St. Louis kicker Jeff Wilkins.
