Falcons Sign K Elam

Saturday, March 22, 2008

(Sports Network) - The Falcons signed kicker Jason Elam on Friday, and the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports it's a four-year deal worth $9 million.

The long-time Denver Broncos kicker has scored 1,786 points and at least 100 points in each of his 15 seasons with the Broncos.

"We're extremely excited to add a kicker of Jason's caliber," said Falcons coach Mike Smith. "He's a proven winner in this league and we are happy that he chose to become a Falcon."

A three-time Pro Bowl selection, Elam won two Super Bowl rings with the Broncos. Now he returns to his home state. Elam attended Brookwood High School in Snellville, Georgia, which is about 25 miles from Atlanta.

Last year, Elam passed quarterback John Elway in games played by a Bronco (236). Elam made his final 15 field goal tries last season.

Elam, 38, will take over for 47-year Morten Andersen and $3.3 million of Elam's contract is guaranteed. Last season, the kicker connected on 87.1 percent of his field goals and has a career 80.6 field-goal percentage.

In 1998, Elam tied Tom Dempsey's record for longest made field goal (63 yards) in Denver against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
