NFL Game Summary - NY Giants At Detroit

Friday, August 8, 2008

(Sports Network) - Jon Kitna threw for 106 yards on 6-of-7 passing with a 20-yard touchdown strike to Roy Williams on Detroit's first series, as the Lions used a late 41-yard Eddie Johnson field goal to down the defending Super Bowl-champion New York Giants, 13-10, at Ford Field.

Kitna's counterpart Eli Manning was only 2-of-6 passing, while former Panthers signal-caller David Carr made the most of his opportunity for the Giants (0-1) with 104 yards through the air on 10-of-13 attempts with a 13-yard touchdown toss to Craphonso Thorpe in the fourth quarter.

Thorpe's score tied the game at 10-10, but Drew Stanton negotiated Detroit down the field for the game-winning field goal. Kevin Smith ran for 22 yards for the Lions (1-0), but Stanton led the way with 26.

Calvin Johnson finished with four catches for 78 yards for Detroit.

Super Bowl heroes Plaxico Burress and David Tyree didn't even make the trip for New York, and New York's offense looked sluggish all night.

Lawrence Tynes' 33-yard field goal cut New York's deficit to 7-3, but Jason Hanson answered with a 50-yard boot before the half, straining a thigh muscle in the process.

Game Notes:

Detroit's first-round draft choice Gosder Cherilus had a tough night on the offensive line with multiple penalties and a grumbling response from the home fans...New York's 16-10 victory in the regular season last year was the fourth of an 11-game road winning streak that rolled all of the way through the Super Bowl victory in Arizona.
