Mequon, WI (Sports Network) - The St. Louis Rams have lost rookie cornerback Justin King for the season with a torn ligament in his left big toe.

King suffered the injury in the first quarter of the Rams' 34-13 loss to the Tennessee Titans on Saturday. The 21-year-old was the Rams' fourth-round selection in the 2008 NFL Draft.

"He was playing good," Rams head coach Scott Linehan said of King. "He's made progress, until he had the injury and now it's a weird deal, but I feel bad for him because he came in and worked really hard. He was really going to push for a lot of playing time throughout this year."

The injury further decimates an already banged-up secondary for St. Louis. Safety Jerome Carter suffered a strained groin against the Titans, joining cornerback Fakhir Brown and safety Oshiomogho Atogwe among the team's walking wounded.

"We're obviously light at corner and we're light at safety now with Jerome (Carter) for practice purposes or anything else," Linehan said. I don't know how long he's going to be out. So we're certainly keeping our eyes open for secondaries."

After playing on offense and defense as a true freshman, King went on to start every game at right cornerback for Penn State during his junior and senior seasons. During that time, he deflected 21 passes and intercepted three others on his way to earning first-team All-Big Ten Conference honors.
