Cutler, Haynesworth And Sproles Named AFC Players Of The Month

Thursday, October 2, 2008

(Sports Network) - Denver Broncos quarterback Jay Cutler, Tennessee Titans defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth and San Diego Chargers kick returner Darren Sproles were named AFC Players of the Month for September.

Cutler, who was named the Offensive Player of the Month, ranks first in the AFC in passing yards (1,275) and completions (102) as the Broncos posted a 3-1 record in September. For the month, Cutler directed an offense that averaged an NFL-best 435.5 yards per game, while scoring a league-high 126 points. He completed 65 percent of his passes with nine touchdowns versus four interceptions and compiled a 98.6 passer rating.

Haynesworth won defensive honors after fueling a Titans defense that ranks first in the NFL in points per game allowed (11.5 average) and takeaways (12). The six-foot-six, 320-pound defensive tackle has at least one sack in three of his team's first four games and ranks second in the AFC and first among NFL defensive tackles with five sacks. In Week 4 against Minnesota, Haynesworth registered seven tackles with two sacks as he helped limit the Vikings rushing attack to 80 total rushing yards.

Sproles took the special teams award after totaling 453 yards (32.4 average) on 14 kick returns, including a kick return-touchdown. His 32.4 kick return average ranks second in the NFL. In Week 2 at Denver, Sproles tied a team record with a 103-yard kickoff return-touchdown, and he is one of just two players in the NFL with a kick return-touchdown through Week 4.
