Report: Giants, Redskins To Open 2008 Season

Thursday, March 27, 2008

(Sports Network) - The Super Bowl champion New York Giants and Washington Redskins will reportedly play the 2008 NFL season-opener on Thursday, September 4 at Giants Stadium.

The New York Daily News cited a league source in its report Thursday, but added that an official announcement probably won't come until next Monday when NFL owners are scheduled to meet.

Defending Super Bowl champs have hosted the Thursday season-opener for the past four years, but the recent tradition of a Thursday night opener started in 2002 when the Giants welcomed the San Francisco 49ers. The Redskins played in the Thursday opener the following year against the New York Jets.

The start time for the game has usually been 8:30 p.m. (et), but the Daily News says this year's opener will likely kickoff at 7 p.m. (et) on NBC to make it less of a conflict with the final night of the Republican National Convention.
