Dolphins Hold Off Jaguars In Pennington's Debut

Saturday, August 16, 2008

(Sports Network) - Chad Pennington was sharp in limited action and Ricky Williams continued a strong preseason, as the Miami Dolphins held off a late comeback bid from the Jacksonville Jaguars for a 19-14 victory in preseason play.

Pennington finished the game 5-of-6 for 55 yards and ran for 18 yards. The 32-year-old was the focal point for Miami (1-1) after signing with the team last week upon being released by the New York Jets, when they acquired Brett Favre from the Green Bay Packers.

Williams also impressed, following up a 31-yard, five-carry performance against Tampa Bay with a 43-yard game on 10 carries with a four-yard touchdown. Ted Ginn Jr. led the way receiving with four catches for 58 yards.

Those performances were especially important considering the loss of running back Ronnie Brown, who suffered a thumb injury in the first quarter and did not return. It's unclear how serious the injury may be.

Chad Henne was equally impressive under center for Miami, finishing out the game by going 17-of-26 for 133 yards.

The first-team offense for Jacksonville (1-1) was sluggish at best as David Garrard was 7-of-14 for 63 yards. Todd Bouman shined in the fourth quarter, leading two touchdown drives while finishing 9-of-13 for 126 yards and a TD pass. Cleo Lemon also saw time and was 5-of-12 for 69 yards. Ryan Hoag starred for a decimated Jags receiving corps with three catches for 71 yards and a 31- yard kickoff return.

On the Dolphins' second possession, Pennington hit Ginn for 22 yards and Williams gained 26 yards on five carries -- including a four-yard touchdown.

Undrafted rookie kicker Dan Carpenter booted two second-quarter field goals, from 31 and 46 yards out, to push Miami's lead to 13-0 at halftime. It was Carpenter's first game action since winning the kicking job outright over veteran Jay Feely, who was released Tuesday.

Carpenter added field goals of 44 and 37 yards in the third and fourth quarters, respectively, to finish 4-for-4 on the evening with 13 points.

That cued a late Jacksonville comeback as Bouman engineered two fourth quarter touchdown drives to make things interesting. Bouman found Hoag for a 53-yard gain to help set up a three-yard Chris Brown touchdown run with 6:20 remaining. Bouman then marched the Jags 73 yards on 11 plays, finding Charles Davis in the end zone from 12 yards out, but with only 23 seconds remaining. An onside kick was unsuccessful.

I really don't understand the flippant term "player's coach", but Tony Dungy is notably one of the best in the NFL. The popular designation has been thrown around loosely by players and the media through the years, but members of the Indianapolis Colts seem to be fine with their veteran coach who makes sure his team is put in the right situation year after year.
