Jags' Collier Shot In Early-Morning Incident

Tuesday, September 2, 2008

(Sports Network) - Jacksonville Jaguars offensive tackle Richard Collier was shot early this morning while outside an apartment complex. Authorities noted he sustained "life-threatening" injuries.

Collier and former Jaguars defensive end Kenneth Pettway were sitting in a car just before 3 a.m. when the gunman fired at the vehicle. Collier is in critical condition at the Shands Jacksonville Medical Center.

Collier is in his third season with the Jaguars.

The Valdosta State All-American has been in trouble before, having been arrested for failing a sobriety test last November. He had promised to stay out of trouble after pleading no contest and receiving six months probation.

Collier is the third NFL player to be shot in less than two years. Washington safety Sean Taylor was fatally shot in his Miami home last November and Denver Broncos cornerback Darrent Williams was killed after leaving a nightclub in January 2007.

I really don't understand the flippant term "player's coach", but Tony Dungy is notably one of the best in the NFL. The popular designation has been thrown around loosely by players and the media through the years, but members of the Indianapolis Colts seem to be fine with their veteran coach who makes sure his team is put in the right situation year after year.
