Caps Sign D Alzner

Thursday, May 22, 2008

(Sports Network) - The Washington Capitals signed defenseman Karl Alzner to a three-year entry-level contract on Thursday.

Per team policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

The 19-year-old Alzner, who was the fifth overall selection in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft, recently completed his fourth season with the Calgary Hitmen of the Western Hockey League and was named the WHL Player of the Year and Defenseman of the Year in 2007-08 after recording 36 points (seven goals, 29 assists) in 60 games.

"We're very excited for Karl as today marks the start of his pro career," said Hitmen coach Kelly Kisio. "Not only has Karl been an excellent defenseman for the Calgary Hitmen but his leadership off the ice will leave a lasting impact in our dressing room."
