Flames Re-Sign Vandermeer, Ink Glencross

Calgary, AB -- (Sports Network) - The Calgary Flames have re-signed defenseman Jim Vandermeer and also inked free agent forward Curtis Glencross.Vandermeer was acquired in a trade from Philadelphia last February and played in 21 games with the Flames, notching a pair of assists and 39 penalty minutes. Calgary was the third stop during the 2007-08 campaign for Vandermeer, who started the season in Chicago. "Jim is a young defenseman who fits in very well with our group and brings us the element of toughness that is important for our team," Flames general manager Darryl Sutter said. "He is clearly a player who plays in our top six. Jim gives us five defensemen still on the upswing and we know we have them for the next three to five years." The 28-year-old native of Alberta played in 26 games for the Blackhawks, then appeared in 28 contests for the Flyers before joining the Flames. He notched a total of three goals and 14 assists for 17 points in 75 games last season. In 267 NHL games with Philadelphia, Chicago and Calgary, Vandermeer has 17 goals and 51 assists for 68 points with 389 penalty minutes. Glencross split last season between Edmonton and Columbus, posting 15 goals with 10 assists for 25 points in a combined 62 games. He has 16 goals and 10 assists in 71 NHL games with Anaheim, Columbus and Edmonton. The Flames also signed veteran forward Pete Vandermeer. The 32-year-old brother of Jim has appeared in just two NHL games, both last season with Phoenix, but has 511 games of American Hockey League experience in 16 pro seasons. "We signed Pete Vandermeer to be a role model for our young players in Quad Cities," added Sutter. "He is a tough, physical player who will be important for the development of our prospects. It's important to have character people like Pete in the organization." In 38 games with San Antonio of the AHL last season, Pete Vandermeer scored a pair of goals and added six assists while racking up 332 penalty minutes.
