Blue Jackets, Oilers Swap Forwards

Tuesday, July 1, 2008

(Sports Network) - The Columbus Blue Jackets have acquired left wing Raffi Torres from the Edmonton Oilers in exchange for forward Gilbert Brule.

Torres, selected by the New York Islanders with the fifth overall pick in the 2000 draft, played in just 32 games with Edmonton last season, posting five goals and 11 points. He missed 49 games because of a knee injury.

"Raffi Torres is an experienced NHL player who combines a physical presence with the ability to score goals," said Blue Jackets general manager Scott Howson. "He will also bring to our club the experience of someone who has played deep into the playoffs as he was a significant contributor to Oilers' run to the 2006 Stanley Cup Finals."

Torres scored a career-high 27 goals in 2005-06 and added four more tallies along with seven assists during Edmonton's long playoff run that spring. In 307 games over six seasons with the Islanders and Oilers, the 26-year-old has notched 67 goals and 126 points.

Brule, an Edmonton native, appeared in 61 games with the Blue Jackets last season, picking up a goal and eight assists. The 21-year-old was the sixth overall pick of the 2005 draft and appeared 146 games over parts of three seasons with Columbus, recording 12 goals.
