Oilers Sign Horcoff To Multi-Year Extension

Wednesday, July 16, 2008

(Sports Network) - The Edmonton Oilers signed center Shawn Horcoff to a six-year contract extension, the club announced Wednesday.

Horcoff is entering the final year of his current three-year contract, and the extension will keep him in Edmonton through the 2014-15 campaign.

"Shawn has proven himself as one of the premier players in the National Hockey League and has been and will continue to be an integral part of our organization moving forward," Oilers general manager Kevin Lowe said. "By being proactive with this deal, we avoid being in a situation where Shawn could become an unrestricted free agent after next season and the unknown free agency can bring to the organization. Having him under contract long-term is something that has been on our radar for a long time and we are extremely pleased to finalize this deal."

The 29-year-old native of Trail, British Columbia was Edmonton's second- leading scorer this past season, compiling 21 goals and 29 assists in 53 games. Horcoff re-aggravated a left shoulder injury at the 2008 NHL All-Star game in Atlanta on January 27. He played in Edmonton's first contest following the All-Star break before electing to undergo season-ending surgery.

Selected by the Oilers in the fourth round (99th overall) of the 1998 NHL Draft, Horcoff has 103 goals and 182 assists in 480 career regular-season games.
