New Jersey Devils (1-0-0) At Pittsburgh Penguins (1-1-0), 7:30 P.m.
(Sports Network) - After opening their season in Sweden, the Pittsburgh Penguins finally return to the Steel City to play the New Jersey Devils tonight at Mellon Arena. Pittsburgh, the defending Eastern Conference champions, split their two-game set in Stockholm with Ottawa last week, winning the first game 4-3 in overtime on Saturday before dropping a 3-1 decision the following day. Marc-Andre Fleury was charged with all three goals on 27 shots while Alex Goligoski scored for the Penguins, who got a pair of goals from Tyler Kennedy, including the game-winner in overtime, in Saturday's win. Fleury has made 18 career starts versus the Devils, going 6-10-2 with a 2.69 goals against average. He went just 2-4-1 in seven starts against them last year. Pittsburgh continues what is technically a five-game homestand, as it was considered the home team in the finale at Stockholm. The Penguins also host Philadelphia, Washington and Toronto over the next week. New Jersey made its season debut on Friday night, and behind yet another solid start from Martin Brodeur, posted a 2-1 victory over the New York Islanders. Brodeur, who won yet another Vezina Trophy last year, stopped all but one of the 26 shots he faced while setting an NHL record for most consecutive season- opening starts with one team. His 14 starts with the Devils surpassed Chicago's Tony Esposito. Zach Parise scored in the first period, while Patrik Elias had the deciding second-period tally. Elias converted a feed from Brian Gionta into a backhanded goal to lift New Jersey. New Jersey is now 4-0-1 in its last five season openers and begins a four-game road trip tonight. Following this test in Pittsburgh, the Devils head to New York to face the Rangers on Monday before stops in Atlanta and Washington. These two clubs split their eight meetings last year, with the Devils winning three of four in Pittsburgh. New Jersey has won seven of its last nine trips to the Steel City.
