Lightning Extend Smith

POSTED: 12:35 pm EDT July 14, 2008

(Sports Network) - The Tampa Bay Lightning signed goaltender Mike Smith to a two-year contract extension on Monday.

The 26-year-old played in 13 games for the Lightning last season when he posted a 2.79 goals-against average with one shutout.

"It goes without saying that Mike has a bright future in the Lightning organization," said vice president of hockey operations Brian Lawton. "It is important in our plan to have locked up Mike."

In 57 NHL contests with Dallas and Tampa Bay, the Ontario product has posted a record of 27-24-0. Smith has collected six shutouts in his NHL career to go along with a save percentage of .905 and a 2.45 goals-against average.

Smith was drafted by the Stars as the 161st overall selection in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft.

Tampa Bay finished in last place of the Eastern Conference last season with only 71 points.
