Thrashers Lock Up G Lehtonen

Wednesday, July 16, 2008

(Sports Network) - The Atlanta Thrashers have agreed to terms with restricted free agent goaltender Kari Lehtonen, the team announced Wednesday. Per club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

One of the league's burgeoning netminders, Lehtonen, 24, posted a 17-22-5 record with a career-high tying four shutouts, a 2.90 goals-against average and a franchise-record .916 save percentage in 48 games with Atlanta last season.

The Helsinki, Finland native was selected by the Thrashers in the first round, second overall, of the 2002 Draft and helped Atlanta capture its first Southeast Division crown in 2006-07.

Lehtonen is 75-61-14 with 11 shutouts, a 2.82 GAA and .913 save percentage in 158 career games. He is already the franchise's all-time leader in games played (for a goalie), wins, shutouts and save percentage, and ranks second in franchise history in GAA.
