FORT WORTH, Texas -- Jury selection started Wednesday in the trial of a Texas woman accused in the gruesome death of a man she allegedly hit with her car.

Prosecutors in Fort Worth say Chante Mallard, (pictured, left) drove home and parked the car in her garage -- with the man still lodged in the windshield.

Authorities said Mallard hit Gregory Biggs with her car in October 2001 along a Fort Worth highway.

Mallard then allegedly drove home with Biggs trapped in her broken windshield, and then ignored his cries as he bled to death in her garage. Investigators said Mallard apologized to the man as she ignored his cries for help. Police said Mallard, with the help of friends, dumped his body in a park.

Biggs had struggled with mental illness and had been staying at a homeless shelter, where workers said he often brought them flowers. He was estranged from his family.

There were no leads in the case until a tip four months later said that Mallard had mentioned the accident at a party.

Two men had pleaded guilty to tampering with evidence in the case. They're expected to testify against Mallard.

Jurors will be back in court next week for attorneys to begin selecting the 12 that will hear the trial.
