Part of keeping your ride looking like-new (and also keeping the resale value high) is ensuring that you protect the car paint job. If the paint gets faded or has chips, scratches, or peeling, it tends to make the car look cheap and low-quality. That doesn’t bode well for you if you’re trying to trade in or sell! Toyota of Clermont is here to help. We have tips to help you maintain your car paint job and keep your car looking fresh despite the paint hazards that spring brings to the table. Let’s get started!

How can you protect your car paint job?

The most important thing that you can do when it comes to maintaining your car paint job is to wash your vehicle regularly! You should soap and rinse every two weeks or so to get rid of dirt, grime, pollen, and other debris. Additionally, if you live close to the coast, you should rinse your ride in the week between washes. There’s a lot of salt in the air if you live near the beach, and you don’t want it to damage your paint.

Here are some other Clermont Toyota tips that will help to keep your car looking fantastic this spring:

Apply wax. You should wax your vehicle 3-4 times a year with a quality wax (we sell plenty at our Toyota of Clermont parts store and our techs can help you pick the right one and show you how to apply it). This will protect your car paint job from UV rays, as well as dirt and small pieces of debris.

Don’t let debris sit – especially lovebugs. Did you know that lovebugs can damage your paint? Use a wet dryer sheet to scrub them off as quickly as possible to head off this problem. You should also quickly remove bird droppings and sap if you find them on your vehicle, as both can mess up your paint.

Don’t neglect your clear coat. Clear coat comes from the factory and it’s applied for a reason – to protect the underlying car paint job! It wards off fading, peeling, chipping, and scratches. If you notice that your clear coat isn’t in the best shape – i.e., it’s peeling or flaking – get it touched up or redone at our sister store’s body shop, Toyota of Orlando.

Park in the shade. This is especially important here in Central Florida because the sun is strong, and we see a lot of it, especially in the spring and summer. If you can park in a garage or covered parking spot, it’ll help protect your car paint job from fading. Even parking under trees can help stave off sun damage (and it keeps the interior of your ride a lot cooler, too).
