Back to school traffic is definitely here – not only are there more cars out on the road, there are also school buses that make frequent stops (and those stops can really eat into your timetable). Like traffic wasn’t bad enough before, now drivers have even more to contend with in their daily commute. Toyota of Clermont is here to help! We’ve got tips on how to best handle heavy traffic so you can keep your cool and enjoy your drive time.

Beat back to school traffic with ease

Tip #1: Prepare ahead of time. This means checking traffic on your normal route before you leave your house (or you can use the technology in your Clermont Toyota – we have both real-time and predictive traffic options up for grabs) so you know if things are going to be backed up. It also means giving yourself plenty of time to get to your final destination. If you arrive early you can always grab a donut, right?

Tip #2: Plan alternate routes. Our Clermont Toyota dealership recommends having at least one alternate route under your belt in case your normal route if clogged up. If you can’t figure out where to go, you can always use the integrated navigation found in so many of our new Toyota cars today. An alternate route will help take some of the pressure off of your drive time.

Tip #3: Stay calm. It’s easy to get angry in heavy traffic because it’s frustrating AND you’re stressed about arriving late. However, try to stay calm as road rage just leads to accidents. Bring an audiobook with you in the car, stream your favorite playlist, or listen to a podcast. You can even use your hands-free technology to call friends and catch up to help the time pass.

Tip #4: Don’t drive aggressively. You may think that driving aggressively – i.e., speeding, weaving, etc. – will help make your commute faster, but it’s really just putting you and everyone around you in danger. Avoid aggressive driving because remember – it’s better to arrive a bit late than to not arrive at all because you’ve gotten into a collision.

Tip #5: Practice defensive driving. Of course you want to follow the rules of the road – abide by speed limit, pay attention to road signs, and be courteous to other drivers – but you should also practice defensive driving. This will help you anticipate accidents before they happen so you can better avoid them. Basically, it just means paying close attention to your own driving AND the people driving around you so you can react more quickly. In essence, put your phone away!
