Lately, the Toyota Prius v has encountered a new competitor in the hybrid car market – the Ford C-Max. The Toyota Prius v in Orlando is an incredibly fuel-efficient model, but as it’s roomier than the rest of the Toyota Prius family, it offers a bit less fuel efficiency, capping out at around 42 mpg (which is still amazing). It was reported by Ford that the Ford C-Max out maneuvered the Toyota Prius v with 47 mpg, but Consumer Reports has recently revealed that this isn’t the case. In fact, the Ford C-Max gets much less fuel efficiency than promised!
Ford C-Max falls short on fuel efficiency claims
In order to test claims that the Ford C-Max could deliver the ensured 47 mpg, Consumer Reports conducted a series of comprehensive tests on new models of both the Ford C-Max and the Ford Fusion. They additionally utilized different drivers, as different driving styles can also have an effect upon fuel efficiency. The results, however, were surprising – the average fuel economy for the Ford C-Max was only 37 mpg as opposed to the promised 47 mpg! Additionally, the Ford Fusion capped out at around 39 mpg, when its window sticker assures it also delivers 47 mpg. Consumer Reports called it the biggest discrepancy they’ve ever seen – and that’s saying something.
In case that wasn’t enough to convince consumers, Consumer Reports also checked out data on Fuelly. Fuelly is a website that lets drivers report real-life fuel efficiency numbers to see how they measure up against manufacturers’ claims. The Orlando Toyota Prius v was spot on, with drivers reporting an estimated 42 mpg. However, the Ford C-Max and Ford Fusion fell short again, delivering 38.7 mpg and 39.9 mpg, respectively. Ford is questioning the results, saying some drivers experience up to 47 mpg, but the numbers seem to indicate differently!
