Smith, Mays Top All-Time Gold Glove Team

Nearly 1 Million Fans Voted For Top Defensive Players

Which nine Major League Baseball players would comprise the best defensive team of all time?

With the help of fan balloting, Rawlings released its roster Wednesday for the All-Time Rawlings Gold Glove team.

The squad included pitcher Greg Maddux, catcher Johnny Bench, first baseman Wes Parker, second baseman Joe Morgan, shortstop Ozzie Smith, third baseman Brooks Robinson, and outfielders Roberto Clemente, Ken Griffey Jr. and Willie Mays.

"It truly is an honor to stand with the very best defensive players," said Smith, a 13-time Gold Glove winner "With so many great players, it's almost impossible to pick the best at each position. I'm thrilled to have been chosen as the No. 1 shortstop."

In a bit of an upset, Parker beat out the likes of Don Mattingly and Keith Hernandez in fan voting for the first baseman selection.

"I'm thrilled to be recognized as one of those who worked hard at what is an under appreciated skill," said Parker, who won Gold Glove awards during his nine-year career with the Los Angeles Dodgers. "I'm particularly pleased to be the lone representative of the Dodgers and the only awardee who is not and will not be in the Hall of Fame. This is my Hall of Fame."

Nearly 1 million fans voted to determine the all-time team.
