East Region


Friday's Games
Six games were slated for Friday in the East Region.

No. 2 Tennessee kicked off the action against No. 15 American. The Vols were tested by the Eagles, but eventually pulled away to a 72-57 victory. American was led by Garrison Carr's 26 points, while JaJuan Smith tallied 19 points for the Vols.

The day's second game was between No. 7 Butler and No. 10 South Alabama. The Bulldogs handily defeated the Jaguars 81-61. Pete Campbell led Butler in scoring with 26 points off the bench, while Daon Merritt recorded 14 points for South Alabama.

North Carolina, the tournament's overall No. 1 seed, made quick work of its first-round opponent, defeating No. 16 Mount St. Mary's -- the winner of Tuesday's play-in game -- 113-74. Tyler Hansbrough and Ty Lawson each scored 21 points for the Tar Heels.

No. 11 St. Joseph's contended with No. 6 Oklahoma in Friday's evening session. The Hawks made a run in the second half, but they were unable to overcome the Sooners, who posted a 72-64 victory. Oklahoma was led by David Godbold's 25 points.

No. 9 Arkansas held off No. 8 Indiana 86-72. Sonny Weems led the Razorbacks in scoring with 31 points while Darian Townes added 17 points and 12 rebounds.

Friday's late game featured No. 3 Louisville against No. 14 Boise State. The Cardinals easily handled the Broncos, recording a 79-61 victory.

Thursday's Games
The East Region opened play with two games in Denver. The first contest was between fourth-seeded Washington State and No. 13 Winthrop. After the game was tied at the half, the Cougars broke out in the second period to record a 71-40 victory over the Eagles. Taj McCullough led Winthrop with 17 points while Aron Baynes paced Washington State with 19 points and eight rebounds.

Thursday's second game featured No. 5 Notre Dame against No. 12 George Mason. The Irish downed the 2006 Final Four participants 68-50 to advance to a second-round meeting with Washington State.

Midwest Region


Friday's Games
No. 7 Gonzaga and No. 10 Davidson opened action in the Midwest Region on Friday. The Wildcats pulled the upset with an 82-76 victory over the Bulldogs. Stephen Curry led all scorers with 40 points to aid Davidson's victory.

Friday's afternoon game featured No. 2 Georgetown against No. 15 UMBC. The Hoyas, who advanced to last year's Final Four, make quick work of their opening-round opponent, downing the Retrievers 66-47. Roy Hibbert and Jonathan Wallace both scored 13 points for Georgetown.

No. 4 Vanderbilt and No. 13 Siena took the court Friday evening. The Saints led the game at the half and held off the Commodores in the second period to record an 83-62 upset. Siena's Kenny Hasbrouck led all scorers with 30 points off the bench.

Friday's final game between No. 5 Clemson and No. 12 Villanova ended in another upset. After trailing the Tigers by 12 at the half, the Wildcats fought back to record a 75-69 victory. The win marked the fourth upset of the day in tournament games played in Tampa, Fla.

Thursday's Games
Action in the Midwest tipped off with top-seeded Kansas taking care of business against No. 16 Portland State. The Jayhawks, which won the Big 12 regular-season and postseason crowns, downed the Vikings 85-61. Kansas was led by Brandon Rush's 18 points.

In the afternoon's No. 8-No. 9-game, eighth-seeded UNLV jumped out to a 21-point lead at the half and held on for a 71-58 victory over ninth-seeded Kent State. Rene Rougeau recorded a double-double for the Rebels, tallying 12 points and 10 rebounds. For Kent State, Mike Scott added 14 points and 10 rebounds.

One of the most anticipated first-round matchups was between No. 6 USC and No. 11 Kansas State and the schools' star freshman. The Wildcats pulled the upset, downing the Trojans 80-67. Both teams were led offensively by their standout rookies, as O.J. Mayo paced USC with 20 points and Michael Beasley tallied 23 points and 11 rebounds for Kansas State.

The late game featured No. 3 Wisconsin against No. 14 Cal State Fullerton. The Badgers, the Big Ten regular season and postseason champions, were tested by the 14th seed in the first half before pulling away to a 71-56 victory.

Friday's Games
Friday's action began with No. 7 Miami taking on No. 10 St. Mary's. Led by Jack McClinton's 38 points, the Hurricanes defeated St. Mary's 78-64.

In afternoon action, No. 2 Texas took on No. 15 Austin Peay. The Longhorns took a 15-point lead into intermission, and were able to hold on to their advantage for a 74-54 victory. A.J. Abrams led Texas with a game-high 26 points.

The South's No. 8-No.9-game was between Mississippi State and Oregon. The Bulldogs recovered from a 10-point deficit at the half to claim a 76-69 victory over the Ducks. Mississippi State's Charles Rhodes led all scorers with 34 points.

The region's top team, No. 1 Memphis, closed out Friday's play by routing No. 16 Texas-Arlington 87-63.

Thursday's Games
The South Region opened play with No. 5 Michigan State defeating No. 12 Temple 72-61. The Spartans were led by Raymar Morgan's 15 points, while the Owls were paced by Mark Tyndale, who scored a game-high 17 points.

In the day's second game, No. 6 Marquette downed No. 11 Kentucky 74-66. The Golden Eagles built a slim lead at the half and were able to hold onto it to record the win and advance to the second round. Joe Crawford scored 35 points in the Wildcats' losing effort, while Jerel McNeal tallied 20 points for Marquette.

No. 4 Pittsburgh took a 23-point lead into halftime against No. 13 Oral Roberts and was able to hang on to post an 82-63 victory. The Panthers were led in scoring by Levance Fields' 23 points, while Robert Jarvis came off the bench for Oral Roberts to record 16 points and seven rebounds.

In the evening game, No. 3 Stanford routed No. 14 Cornell 77-53. The Cardinal, which led by 21 at the half, were paced by Kenny Brown, who tallied 18 points off the bench. The Big Red were led by Louis Dale's 12 points and six rebounds.

West Region


Friday's Games
Friday's slate features just two first-round games.

In the first contest, No. 5 Drake took on No. 12 Western Kentucky. The Hilltoppers held a sizable lead over Drake for most of the first half before the Bulldogs came back to tie the game in the second half, forcing the game into overtime. With two seconds left of the clock and trailing 99-98, Western Kentucky's Ty Rogers hit a three-pointer to give the Hilltoppers a 101-99 victory.

The day's final game in the West Region's first-round action also went to overtime. No. 13 San Diego led No. 4 UConn late in the second half before the Huskies came back to tie it at the end of regulation. After a tight extra session, San Diego's De'Jon Jackson hit a jumper with 1.2 seconds remaining to put his team up 70-69 and give the Toreros the upset victory.

Thursday's Games
No. 14 Georgia's postseason run ended Thursday against No. 3 Xavier. After making an improbable run to win the SEC tournament to secure their berth in the NCAA tourney, the Bulldogs held a double-digit against the Musketeers before they eventually fell 73-61. Xavier was led in scoring by Josh Duncan's 20 points, while Terrance Woodbury led Georgia with 16.

No. 6 Purdue took on No. 11 Baylor in afternoon action. The Boilermakers rolled past the Bears 90-79. Curtis Jerrells led Baylor with 27 points, while E'Twaun Moore recorded 16 points and eight rebounds for Purdue.

Perennial tournament threat No. 2 Duke nearly suffered an upset against No. 15 Belmont. After trailing at the half, the Bruins battled back in the second period to take the Blue Devils to the wire before falling 71-70. Alex Renfroe led Belmont with 15 points while Gerald Henderson tallied 21 points and eight rebounds for Duke.

In the West's evening action, No. 8 BYU took on No. 9 Texas A&M. The Aggies pulled a mild upset with a 67-62 victory. Texas A&M was led by Josh Carter's 26 points while the Cougars were paced by Jonathan Tavernari's 15 points.

No. 10 Arizona, which is playing the season without long-time coach Lute Olson, opened tournament action against No. 7 West Virginia. After a close first half, the Mountaineers pulled away in the second period to record a 75-65 victory.

Thursday's action concluded in the West Region with top-ranked No. 1 UCLA taking on Mississippi Valley State. The Bruins dominated the 16th seed, holding the challenger to just 16 points in the first half en route to posting a 70-29 win.
