Hoyas Ease Past UMBC To Set Up Meeting With Davidson

POSTED: 2:17 am EDT March 22, 2008

(Sports Network) - Roy Hibbert and Jonathan Wallace had 13 points each as the Georgetown Hoyas beat the UMBC Retrievers, 66-47, in the first round of the NCAA Tournament's Midwest Regional.

Austin Freeman added 11 points and Patrick Ewing, Jr. scored 10 for the second-seeded Hoyas (28-5), who have won eight of nine and advanced to play 10th-seeded Davidson in Sunday's second round. Davidson beat Gonzaga, 82-76, earlier in the day.

Darryl Proctor had 16 points and eight rebounds for the 15th-seeded Retrievers (24-9), who entered having won 12 of 13. Brian Hodges added 11 points for UMBC, which captured both the regular season and tournament title in the America East Conference.

"They are a real scrappy team," Hibbert said of UMBC. "They are under-sized, but they like to get up and down the floor and get up shots. They like to just throw different stuff at you on defense. So I think that they did a good job, but I think we pulled through today."

Trailing 5-0, UMBC moved ahead with a 7-0 run, capped by Matt Spadafora's three with 15:24 to go.

Moments later, a Jessie Sapp triple sparked a 13-0 run, giving the Hoyas a 31-17 lead with 2:53 left in the first half.

The Retrievers finally broke a string of eight straight missed shots on a Ray Barbosa three with 1:13 left in the half and Cavell Johnson added a dunk with eight seconds to go, pulling UMBC within 31-22.

Chris Wright, though, drilled a three at the buzzer, putting Georgetown on top 34-22 at the half.

After Proctor's layup with 6:36 to go pulled UMBC within 52-39, Georgetown pulled away with an 8-0 run. Ewing's layup with 4:15 left pushed the lead to 60-42.

"I think we played up to the level," Proctor said. "It's just some shots that didn't fall for us that we usually take."

The Retrievers never threatened the rest of the way.
