X Marks The Spot: Musketeers Into Sweet 16

POSTED: 9:32 pm EDT March 22, 2008

(Sports Network) - Drew Lavender scored 18 points, 15 in the second half, and doled out nine assists as third-seeded Xavier came back to down sixth-seeded Purdue, 85-78, in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

C.J. Anderson finished with 18 points and seven rebounds, and Josh Duncan scored 16 points and grabbed five rebounds for the Musketeers (29-6), who move on to Phoenix, where they will face West Virginia in a West Regional semifinal on Thursday. The seventh-seeded Mountaineers upended Duke, 73-67, earlier Saturday to advance to the Sweet 16.

Stanley Burrell added 11 points for Xavier, which advanced to the Sweet 16 for the first time since 2004.

Keaton Grant scored 19 points for the Boilermakers (25-9), who fell in the second round for the second year in a row. E'Twaun Moore scored 15 points and had five rebounds and Tarrance Crump scored 11 points for Purdue, which was looking to make it to the Sweet 16 for the first time since 2000.

Xavier fell behind early, similar to in its 73-61 come-from-behind win over No. 14 seed Georgia in first-round action on Thursday, but came back and staved off a late Purdue push to move on.

Purdue erased a 10-point deficit late in the second half with an 11-0 run. Robbie Hummel scored five points on the push, including a three-pointer, and a Moore jumper gave the Boilermakers a 61-60 lead with 5:42 remaining.

"We knew the game wasn't over until the whistle says that the game is over," said Grant. "We had a chance to get back in the game and we got back in."

B.J. Raymond converted a three-point play, though, and Lavender and Anderson each scored baskets to push Xavier ahead 67-61.

The Musketeers led by nine before a Grant three sliced the deficit to 75-69 with 1:09 remaining. Lavender sank two free throws, but Marcus Green drained a three to cut Xavier's lead to 77-72 with 48.7 seconds left.

Lavender made 6-of-6 free throws in the final minute, though, and the Musketeers hung on.

"They're a very good team," said Hummel. "They have a lot of talent and they're very balanced so with that they're hard to beat."

Just like on Thursday, the Musketeers fell behind early. A three-point play by Crump capped a 12-2 Purdue run to start the game, and the Boilermakers led by 10 with 14:46 left in the first half.

Xavier didn't wait until the second half to come roaring back, though, as a Jason Love three-point play kicked off a 13-0 Musketeers run. Duncan drained a three on the push, which Derrick Brown capped with a dunk, boosting Xavier to a 23-18 lead with 7:54 to play in the half.

Purdue hung with Xavier, though, and a Lavender three in the final 10 seconds was the difference at the half, giving the Musketeers a 35-32 lead.
