More than 14 years after their rivalry took center stage at the 1994 Olympics, former figure skaters Nancy Kerrigan and Tonya Harding were back in the news Thursday, but for very different reasons.

Harding was promoting her new book, "The Tonya Tapes," in which she gives details of a life of abuse and her connection to the attack on Kerrigan.

"I'm just a person who's led a rollercoaster life," Harding told the "Today" show.

Harding was accused of being involved in clubbing her rival Kerrigan in the knee before the 1994 nationals.

Soon after the attack, it surfaced that Harding's then-husband, Jeff Gillooly, was involved in the incident. He and his friends told authorities that Harding also participated in the plotting of the attack, but the figure skater only admitted to knowing about the attack after it had already happened.

Kerrigan and Harding both competed at the 1994 Lillehammer Games, where Kerrigan claimed silver.

In her book, Harding said she intended to go to the authorities when she first learned that Gillooly was involved in the attack on Kerrigan, but that he and his associates threatened her.

Harding also revealed in her book that she was abused by her mother. The former skater said that if she had a bad practice session, her mom would take her into the bathroom and beat her. When contacted by the "Today" show, Harding's mom denied the abuse allegations.

Harding also had violent relationships with men. Her second marriage resulted in a restraining order, and in 2000, she was accused of throwing a hubcap at her then-boyfriend, Darren Silver, and punching him. She spent three days in jail for the incident.

The skater said on "Today" that she kept the struggles in her life private until now because she was "embarrassed, ashamed of her life." She also said that she used figure skating as an escape from her everyday life, that the rink was her "sanctuary."

Harding said that she's found peace in her life and she's ready to tell her story in hopes that it might encourage other people to get help if they need it.

While Harding was revealing her life story, Kerrigan was celebrating the birth of her third child.

Kerrigan and Jerry Soloman welcomed Nicole Elizabeth, who weighed in at 6 pounds, 12 ounces, on Wednesday, The Boston Herald reported.

The couple also has two sons, Matthew, 11, and Brian, 3.
