Edwards Wins Nationwide Race At Richmond

Posted: 10:56 pm EDT September 7, 2008

(Sports Network) - Just hours after completing 400 laps in the Sprint Cup event, Carl Edwards scored the victory in Sunday's rescheduled Emerson Radio 250 at the Richmond International Raceway. Points leader Clint Bowyer dominated most of the Nationwide Series race, leading 195 of 250 laps, but Edwards passed him with 28 laps to go and then held off Scott Wimmer at the finish.

The victory was Edwards fourth of the season and the 17th of his Nationwide career.

"Clint was doing such a good job, and he was just a little free and was hanging on for all he was worth," Edwards said. "He just wiggled that one time and that's all I needed."

Joey Logano started on the pole and led the first seven laps, but Bowyer took over from there. He ran out in front until the first round of pit stops when Edwards captured the lead for the first time on Lap 33.

Bowyer quickly reclaimed the top spot on Lap 40 and held it all the way until Lap 206 when he relinquished it to David Stremme during a caution. When the race resumed, Bowyer quickly moved around Stremme and grabbed the lead.

Bowyer appeared to be on the way to his second victory of the season but got loose on Lap 228, allowing Edwards to dive underneath him. Wimmer moved up to the second position several laps later.

"That's a bummer but what can you do," Bowyer said. "That's just how close it is. One little slip up and that's all it takes."

The ninth and final caution for debris set up an eight lap shootout to the finish. Edwards pulled away from Richard Childress Racing teammates Wimmer and Bowyer on the restart. He beat Wimmer to the finish line by 1.552 seconds.

Bowyer, Denny Hamlin and David Ragan completed the top-five.

With the victory, Edwards moved up to second in the championship standings but trails Bowyer by 207 points with seven races to go in the season. Brad Keselowski struggled throughout the race and ended up finishing 21st. Keselowski is now 279 markers behind Bowyer.

The next Nationwide race is scheduled for Saturday, September 20th, at the Dover International Speedway.
