Sharks Carve Up Lightning

Posted: 1:17 am EST January 14, 2009

(Sports Network) - Joe Thornton registered two goals and an assist, as San Jose crushed the Tampa Bay Lightning, 7-1, at the Shark Tank.

Devin Setoguchi, Milan Michalek and Ryane Clowe were among six different goal scorers for the Sharks, who have won three straight and four of their last five games overall.

Steve Stamkos was the lone goal scorer for Tampa Bay, which saw its two-game win streak halted. Karri Ramo allowed all seven goals on 42 shots in the loss.

The Sharks opened the scoring at the 2:17 mark of the first period. Thornton held the puck along the rear boards to the right of the net and sent a centering pass into the low slot for Setoguchi, whose one-timer beat Ramo over the shoulder.

With 5:41 remaining in the first stanza, Thornton's power-play tally gave the Sharks a two-goal edge.

Stamkos' goal at the 7:47 mark of the middle session cut the Lightning's deficit in half. Mark Recchi took a shot from the high left circle and Stamkos deflected it home from the top of the crease.

However, from there, it was all San Jose, which scored three more goals in the period and two more in the third.

The three Sharks goals in the second frame were scored by Thornton, Michalek and Clowe.

First, at the period's midpoint, Thornton punched home a rebound from the goal mouth after a shot by Setoguchi from the top of the left circle.

With 2:39 to play before the second intermission, the Sharks moved ahead 4-1 on a power-play tally. With Ryan Malone in the penalty box for tripping, the Sharks moved the disc around their offensive zone before a blast from the centerpoint was stopped by Ramo. But Michalek was in perfect position in front and he shoved the puck over the goal line from in close.

Nifty passing by the Sharks led to a 5-1 margin. Again skating 5-on-4, this time due to an interference call on Vinny Lecavalier, Michalek held control atop the left circle and dealt the disc to Jonathan Cheechoo at the bottom of the circle. Cheechoo then sent a pass to Clowe, who was in a shooting position in the low slot and he lit the lamp with four seconds to go in the period.

Joe Pavelski and Tomas Plihal scored in the third.
