Ohio State suspended linebacker Robert Reynolds Monday for one game after he choked Wisconsin quarterback Jim Sorgi during the third quarter of Saturday's game.

Ohio State linebacker Robert Reynolds apologized Sunday night for jabbing Wisconsin quarterback Jim Sorgi in the throat, knocking him out of the Badgers' 17-10 win over the Buckeyes. Do you think the injury accidental?

Reynolds will sit out Saturday's against Iowa.

"Robert has apologized and is sincerely sorry for his actions last week," Ohio State coach Jim Tressel said. "I want to emphasize that I think this is an isolated incident and completely out of character for Robert Reynolds. However, after getting a firsthand look at the tape and seeing what took place, I feel that the apology by itself is not enough. Robert's conduct was totally unacceptable and has no place in intercollegiate athletics. I am therefore suspending him for the Iowa game."

Sorgi said early Monday, before the suspension was announced, he forgave Reynolds and he appreciated all the concern.

"It was kind of scary during the game, but physically, I'm fine," he said. "I just want to thank everybody for being concerned about me during the game, after the game, and this weekend. I did receive a call from Reynolds last night, and he did apologize to me over the phone, and we talked about it, and I accepted his apology. I know how things get during the game, and I know how things can happen. He made a mistake, and it's a sign of a man when you can make a mistake like that and call and apologize for it." The Big Ten Conference released a statement and said that it concurred with Ohio State's one-game suspension. The conference said that it also reprimanded Reynolds for violating the Conference Sportslike Conduct Code.

"Robert Reynolds' actions toward Wisconsin student-athlete Jim Sorgi have no place in our game," Big Ten Commissioner James E. Delany said. "We agree with Ohio State's implementation of the suspension and the direct apologies from Reynolds and head coach Jim Tressel to Sorgi, head coach Barry Alvarez and the entire Wisconsin team."

Reynolds issued an apology Sunday to Sorgi and Alvarez for choking Sorgi during the third quarter of Saturday's 17-10 loss at Camp Randall Stadium.

"I talked to Coach Alvarez and to Jim Sorgi earlier today and apologized for my actions," Reynolds said. "I lost my poise and there is no excuse for that. That is certainly not characteristic of Ohio State football. I take full responsibility for my action. As a senior, I have a responsibility to set a better example."

Reynolds jammed his fingers into Sorgi's neck and choked him during the Badgers' 17-10 win Saturday. Then he held Sorgi down by the neck at the bottom of a pile of players after the quarterback scrambled with five minutes left in the third quarter. Sorgi did not return to the game after the incident. No penalty was called on the play. Sorgi expects to practice this week and play Saturday when the Badgers host Purdue.

Dane County District Attorney Brian Blanchard said he will not charge Reynolds criminally.

"There's a lot of gratuitous violence in college football," Blanchard said. "The tone is set by the coaches and referees. If the coaches and referees are going to police these things, they're going to do it. There'll be consequences for this young man, but I'm not going to use the resources of the DA's office on this."
