Top-seeded Florida beats Georgia Tech, advances in NCAAs

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Peter Alonso drove in three runs, Alex Faedo pitched eight scoreless innings and overall No. 1 seed Florida advanced in the NCAA Tournament by beating Georgia Tech 10-1 Sunday night in the Gainesville Regional.

The Gators (50-13) will host in-state rival Florida State in a best-of-three super regional next weekend. Florida swept all three games against the Seminoles this season and has won 10 of the last 12 in the series.

Coach Kevin O'Sullivan's team could be tough to beat if it continues playing like it did against the Yellow Jackets (38-25). Florida had 12 hits, nine walks and was even better on the mound while improving to 32-4 at home this season.

Alonso, who returned this weekend after missing nearly a month with a broken bone in his left hand, had an RBI double in the fifth and a two-run single in the sixth. That was plenty for Faedo (13-1), who won his seventh consecutive start. The right-hander allowed four hits and struck out 10.
