Crimes Not Likely To Be Solved In Orlando And Orange County

Monday, July 21, 2008 – updated: 5:09 pm EDT July 21, 2008

Not even a third of major crimes in Central Florida are ever solved and in the city of Orlando, the statistics are even worse. In Orlando only one in six crimes are solved.

It’s something Kathy Banks knows all to well. Right next door to her Malibu Groves home, 32-year-old Christina Grove was found murdered, likely during a home invasion.

"It’s scary," said Banks who also said she’s also concerned about people breaking and entering.

Burglary is the most common crime within the city of Orlando.

In a 10 day period in July, there were 127 burglaries, 3 murders, 69 assaults, and 42 robberies. In the last year there were seven robberies at pharmacies. (see list of Central Florida pharmacy robberies) Overall, fewer than one in five of those crimes have been solved.

"I wouldn’t call it a startling number, but it is a number that seems low," said Orlando Deputy Police Chief Sonja White.

White tracks crime for the Orlando Police Department. She says out of 27 murders this year, 11 have been solved.

Despite a $111-million budget, Orlando Police solved just 15-percent of crimes in the city last year. It's one of the worst rates in the state based on population.

"It does concern us. It concerns the agency when we look at the numbers being reported by other agencies," said White.

White said the low solve rate has not gone unnoticed and has already prompted changes such as following up on cases more diligently.

"What we do is gather all the information put it in a report and then hold our detectives accountable," said White.

The Pinellas County Sheriff's Office protects nearly the same number of people as O.P.D. but solves twice the number of crimes.

Miami and Fort Lauderdale do have worse solve rates, but Jacksonville, St. Petersburg, Tampa and Fort Myers all have better solve rates. So does the Orange County Sheriff’s Office.

"Our clearance rate is 26-percent," said Capt. Angelo Nieves of the Orange County Sheriff’s Office.

In Orange County, during the same 10-days as O.P.D. was surveyed, there were 65 robberies, 17 sexual batteries, 3 of which were rapes and 200 burglaries. Of those 200 burglaries, just 39 have been solved. That's despite a $170-million budget for the coming fiscal year.

"We would compare ourselves to any other agency. We're doing better with less resources," said Nieves.

For friends of victims, like Omar Roman who was killed during an unsolved home invasion, it's hard to believe all that money can't bring an end to their suffering.

"I don't feel like they're doing anything," said the friend who didn’t want to be identified because she’s still scared.

In her case it's been months with no suspects and now she says detectives have stopped calling.
