Consumer Says Moving Company is Holding Her Belongings Hostage

Tuesday, August 12, 2008 – updated: 12:51 pm EDT August 12, 2008

Everybody knows moving is expensive but a woman in Titusville claims a moving company turned a $3,000 estimate, into a $30,000 bill.

Now the breast cancer patient, say's her furniture is being held hostage because she can't pay.

The only furniture in Sara Darden’s Titusville home is rental furniture. Since she moved, a company now has everything Darden owns even though she faces breast cancer surgery later this month..

“I've been in there sleeping on the floor for a good while,” said Darden.

Darden expected to pay an estimated $3,000 to Neighbor's Moving and Storage, to move her belongings into storage for a few months, then to a new house.

Darden claims the bill hit $9,000 so she could not get her furniture back.

“Everything is in there, I got jewelry. I got everything,” said Darden

Since then, receipts show, the mover charged $3,000/month, since January, so her bill now totals more than $30,000.

“I could never get that kind of money now anyway,” said Darden.

Channel 9 went to see Neighbors Moving and Storage manager Ray Ricci and asked how the bill could be so large.

“I'll have to look through the files and see,” said Ricci.

The company is based in South Florida, and if you check its history you can find other families who had serious complaints.

22 complaints at the better business bureau in 3 years, but it was responsive.

After we raised the issue, the company called that $30,000 bill an accounting mistake so the bill is really less than $9,000.

It's working to resolve issues with Darden, who is desperate and doesn’t know if she’ll ever see her belongings again.

The company has promised to send Darden a new detailed bill and it's considering a payment plan.

Darden filed a complaint with Florida Consumer Services, the body that regulates moving companies.
